Gurpreet Singh early life and Education
Born on February 3, 1992, into a Sikh Jat family in Mohali, Punjab. He started playing football when he was eight years old. In 2000, he joined St. Stephen’s Academy in Chandigarh to get good training and more chances to play football. He continued studying at St. Stephen’s Academy at Chandigarh and played for their team regularly. He worked hard and stayed focused on his game.
For the next six years, he showed great skills on the field. He soon got the opportunity to play for the Punjab Under-16 team and made his debut for the state in 2006 at Haldwani, Uttarakhand.

Gurpreet entered professional football
Sandhu signed his first professional contract with East Bengal in 2010. He went on to make five appearances for the club in the remainder of the 2009-10 season.
He started the 2011-12 season as a second-choice goalkeeper for East Bengal in the now-defunct domestic football competition called the Federation Cup of India.
Soon, Sandhu took over as the first-choice goalkeeper for the club in the I-League, which was then India’s top-division football league. He played his senior international debut match in 2011 against Turkmenistan.
He kicked off the I-League campaign with a game against the Goa-based Churchill Brothers and ended up on the losing side 1-0. Later that same season, he made his Asian continental competition debut in an Asian Football Confederation Cup match against Qatari side Al-Oruba, which also ended in a 1-0 defeat.
Altogether, he made 24 appearances for the Kolkata club that season.
In the next couple of seasons, Sandhu made 59 appearances for East Bengal across all competitions, playing 22 matches in the I-League. Word of his goalkeeping skills started to spread in both the Indian and international football fraternity. Around this time, a few European clubs, impressed by his performance, began knocking on his door.
Sandhu’s career-changing move to Europe
On August 15, 2014, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu signed with Stabaek, a Norwegian football club, marking a big moment in his career. His joining so meant entrance into the elite club of Indian football players who played in Europe, besides Mohammed Salim, Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri, and Subrata Pal.
On January 18, 2015, Sandhu made his debut in a friendly match against Follo Fotballklubb, a second-tier team in Norway. In 2016, he featured regularly in Stabaek’s Norwegian Football Cup campaign and made his league debut against IK Start in May, keeping a clean sheet in a 5-0 win. He thus became the first Indian to play in a top European league.

In the 2018-19 season, Sandhu kept seven clean sheets and helped Bengaluru win their first ISL title. He was made the vice-captain of the club in 2021 and had led the team as captain whenever Sunil Chhetri was not available.
